M35 Bachelor of Communications

The School of Communications and Arts offers a course designed to enable students to succeed in today’s rapidly changing society. Its undergraduate program focuses on the theoretical and practical dimensions of communication and includes nine major streams of study comprising Advertising,  Broadcasting, Creative Services, Journalism, Mass Communication, Media & Cultural Studies, Public Relations, Screen Studies and Scriptwriting. The School offers students a caring, supportive environment with expert staff who are committed to quality teaching and research. The undergraduate program comprises 24 units and normally requires three years of full-time study (or part-time equivalent) to complete. However, exemptions may be granted to students who have successfully studied in another program allowing for more rapid completion of the course.

COURSE STRUCTURE

The Bachelor of Communications aims to provide graduates with a range of Communications skills, and to prepare them for work in Communications professions. Students specialise by taking either one or two Majors from a choice of:

Advertising

Broadcasting

Creative Services

Journalism

Mass Communication

Media&Cultural Studies

Public Relations

Screen Studies (only available to WA Screen Academy students)
Scriptwriting

The Bachelor of Communications degree is a 24 unit, 360 credit point, three year full-time award which may be studied in part-time mode.

 

The degree has three main components:

  1. a foundation program of four core units (two compulsory and two chosen) and four electives related to a specialised area
  2. a Major program consisting of eight units in a specialised area (listed above)
  3. a supplementary program consisting of eight units comprising:
    • a second Major from the Bachelor of Communications or from elsewhere within the School or outside the School
      OR
    • a Minor study (six units), plus two electives;
      OR
    • an elective program of eight units.

 

Whatever pattern students choose:

  • normally no more than ten of the units studied should be at first year level;
  • at least four units must be at third year level;
  • the Screen Studies major is only available to Screen Academy students;
  • it is recommended that students select units from their chosen major(s) in the first and second semesters of enrolment.
 
CORE UNITS
Students must complete the following two compulsory core units (30 credit points):

Plus students should select a further 30 credit points from the following:
CCA1101 Contexts of Modernity 15
CCA1102 Representation and Interpretation 15
CCA1103 Creativity: Theory, Practice and History 15
CMM1107 Creative Thinking 15
CMM1109 Cyberculture Studies 15
CMM1113 Media and Social Context 15
HMN1101 Home and Away: Introducing the Humanities 15
HMN1102 What is Knowledge? 15
 
ELECTIVE UNITS
Students must select 60 credit points (four units) from the list of elective units recommended in the chosen area of specialisation. Any unit already completed as a Foundation core unit cannot be counted again as an elective.
 
 
Students must complete at least one Major program of 120 credit points (eight units) within the School of Communications and Arts. The remaining 120 credit points may come from another Major within or outside the School, or from a combination of minor and elective units.
