SWK3103 Welfare State and Human Service Organisations

Description:
This unit locates human service organisations within the traditions, policies and practices of the welfare state. Students are introduced to the history of the welfare state as these traditions, policies and practices have arisen from a specific economic, cultural and social context. This history is examined from a critical cultural, social and historical perspective. Students will explore the nature, structure and functions of human service organisations as they reflect the policies and practices of the welfare state.

Students are introduced to contemporary debates of what is the welfare state and what is the organisational context of welfare?. The changing nature of the welfare state and the consequent impact on human service organisations will be examined. The unit will examine organisational functions, structures, and processes as reflective of the functions and roles of the welfare state. Areas of tension, difference and compatibility between the role of the welfare state and the delivery of its services will be critically examined.
