This unit takes a comparative approach to the management of people in our globalising world. It describes and systematically analyses the similarities and differences between different countries’ characteristic sets of human resource management (HRM) practices. Cultural, socio-political, legislative, historical and economic influences are explored and evaluated to determine how and why the HRM practice varies between countries. The unit also explores the phenomenon of international human resource management (IHRM) – that is, the cross-border management of people that is practiced by multinational and transnational corporations. It explains why IHRM at the same time offers both challenges and rewards for organisations and their staffs. Case study material is drawn from both Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and South East Asian countries.
