Credit Points: 15

Description:

This unit is an introduction to managing in organisations and is designed for students without previous appropriate managerial work experience. It will be achieved through a critical discussion of the roles of managers and characteristics of managerial work; sustainability, the environment, structure and culture of organisations. The unit includes the analysis of the evolution of management as well as the analysis of current sustainable managerial practice: ways of understanding managing, approaches to learning about managing; the nature of managerial work such as planning, organising, leading and controlling. The unit will also critically examine the management of the organisation’s internal and external environments, and the structural control of organisations. This unit will also examine the manager as a person, including their role and activities that endeavour to achieve a sustainable future for the organisation and the community. As a foundation unit for students without previous appropriate managerial work experience, an embedded study skills program which forms part of the weekly offering to students is included. This program aims to enrich student understanding and capabilities by providing them with support that develops their academic skills in reading, writing and critical analysis.
