Y89 Bachelor of Science (Cyber Security)

This course is designed to prepare students for careers in the field of cyber security, including areas such as network security, computer forensics, information warfare and wireless security. The program focuses on the practical and theoretical dimensions of IT security across a range of fundamental areas such as network security and vulnerability assessment, information security, digital forensics, wireless device security and database security. Students will achieve a solid grounding in conventional computer and network security concepts and skills. In addition the course is designed to meet the changing landscape of secure computing which involves not only computers but also telecommunications networks and network enabled devices such as smartphones.

Standard university entry requirements apply.


Students who have completed a TAFE Diploma, Polytechnic Diploma or its equivalent in an allied field may be admitted with advanced standing. Some students may be eligible for recognition of prior learning, subject to approval.

COURSE STRUCTURE

The course is made up of 360 credit points (24 units) of study. There are three electives in this course, two of which can be taken at any year level, but one of which must be at second or third year level. Students are otherwise required to complete all units listed below.

 

WORK INTEGRATED LEARNING

Students in this course have the opportunity to seek a Work Integrated Learning placement with and industry partner equivalent to one semester of fulltime study.Students should consult with their Course Coordinator at the commencement of their second year regarding Work Integrated Learning processes, timelines and requirements.

 

Such placements are available to students who have:

  • Successfully completed any prerequisite units,
  • successfully completed at least two thirds of the requirements towards the degree and,
  • have a Weighted average mark (WAM) of 65% or higher across their course, or
  • have a WAM of 70% or higher for the two semesters preceding their application.

 

Students who meet these criteria and who wish to participate in Work Integrated Learning must apply in writing to their Course Coordinator by the end of Week 9 of the Semester PRIOR to the intended placement. Students should seek the advice of the Course Coordinator well before this as to appropriateness of pursuing the work placement option within their course structure and also as to their eligibility to be considered.

 

Selection will be based on academic performance, the application and a formal interview process.

Successful applicants for work placement must enroll in and complete the requirements for CSI3345 Work Experience Project. This is a 60 credit point unit and represents a full semester's study load. Students are advised NOT to enroll in any additional units while taking the Work Experience Project unit.

 

Students undertaking a Work Integrated Learning placement will enrol in CSI3345 Work Experience Project in place of CSG3303 Applied IT Project + 3 electives. Students should ensure that they have sufficient electives available towards the end of their course to make the Work Integrated Learning placement viable within their course structure.
