This unit introduces students to the principles of managing environmental issues at the ecosystem level. It deals with the complexity of ecosystem responses to human activity within the context of systems theory. The unit critically evaluates the notion of ‘holism’ in environmental management, and focuses on terrestrial ecosystems (forests, woodlands, rangelands, grasslands etc.) and on landscape-scale ecological processes.
