MAE2010 Primary Mathematics Education 1

This unit enables pre-service teachers to take a broader view of the teaching and learning of mathematics. An emphasis will be placed on Working Mathematically and developing number sense as well as covering other content areas of the primary mathematics curriculum. Pre-service teachers will develop their own problem solving skills as well as identify strategies for using a problem solving approach in the classroom. The extension of classroom planning and assessment skills to cover extended periods of time will be addressed, including the use of technology, as well as the integration of content both within the mathematics curriculum and across to other learning areas. Current issues and policies of the various education systems in WA will be examined. Pre-service teachers will extend their own mathematics competence to enable them to use a wider range of teaching and learning resources and strategies to improve mathematics outcomes for students.
