LIT1010 Literacy and Language Education 1

This unit provides an introduction to communication, spoken language and literacy and to the diversity of language and literacy learners. Pre-service teachers will critically examine a range of theories about language learning and teacher/child interaction; explore ways in which language is constructed and learned in a range of social and cultural contexts; reflect on the variety of language backgrounds and experiences of individuals and groups of people in our society; and examine the structure and function of language in context. The concept of multilingualism and multi-dialectalism will be introduced. Pre-service teachers will plan, implement and reflect upon language learning experiences and teaching approaches for diverse groups of learners in various contexts. Children’s literature will be embedded within this unit.
