LAN2101 Language and Literacy 1
SCHOOL OF EDUCATION
Credit Points: 15

Description:
This is the second of four units in language and literacy education. It introduces preservice teachers to research based theory and practice in literacy education. Literacy is defined broadly as using speaking, listening, viewing, reading and writing to communicate and shape ideas and values. The unit focuses on the acquisition of literacy in kindergarten through primary contexts and the major theoretical frameworks which influence teaching practices. Modules in the unit include the link between oral and written language, the elements in a balanced literacy program, catering for individual needs, planning and assessing literacy learning and creating a supportive learning environment. It builds upon preservice teachers’ knowledge about language, gained in the unit Introduction to Language and is closely articulated with the concurrent units which focus on planning for learning.
