Student teachers will undertake this three week Designated Professional Practice unit in a kindergarten/pre-primary setting or a primary class room. This unit is one of a series of Professional Practice units designed to scaffold Pre-service teachers’ learning and development of teaching and management skills and their professional development. This unit provides Pre-service teachers with an opportunity to plan, teach and evaluate learning within a K-primary classroom. This work will be completed through the mentoring of the teacher who, in turn, acts as a support for the learning and development of the student teacher/s assigned to them. Pre-service teachers will be expected to prepare detailed learning plans and to evaluate their own and the children’s learning. When not directly involved in teaching, Pre-service teachers are expected to be actively involved in the learning of children and the work of the centre/school. This will include observation, participation in groups taught by others, working with individuals or small groups, or assisting teachers with their non-teaching responsibilities. Some of this work may involve specific tasks associated with other university units.
