The purpose of this double degree is to provide a realistic and relevant balance between professional education studies and content studies for prospective secondary school teachers of home economics in secondary schools. The course includes an emphasis on theoretical and practical dimensions in the areas of children and family studies, textiles, hospitality and food science in addition to relevant studies in Education.
This course is a concurrent form of teacher education where the student is able to combine studies in Education, and Children and Family Studies and Home Economics in each semester. In the early stages, greater attention is given to content studies while professional studies tend to dominate the latter semesters.
A feature of the course is an extensive program of professional practice in secondary schools that commences in year 2 and culminates in the Assistant Teacher Program (10 weeks) in the final year.
The course provides a clear balance of content studies, professional studies and professional practice.
Special Exit Points Students who complete only three years of study will be able to qualify for a Bachelor of Social Science, subject to meeting the course structure of that award
Professional Recognition Graduates will qualify as four-year trained teachers and be able to meet teacher registration requirements in all Australian states. |

COURSE STRUCTURE The course comprises of thirty six (36) units of study (480 credit points) with sixteen units being studied in each degree course. Students normally complete 120 credit points each year.
Within this course, students are also required to select units in a Minor area of study:
Minor General Studies units – These are content studies units offered outside the School of Education in a relevant area of study. Minor Curriculum Studies units – These are curriculum studies units offered within the School of Education in a relevant area of study which relate to the choice of minor general studies units.
Catholic accreditation can be obtained by completing a minor field in Catholic Education.
A list of these units is available on enrolment, and will be agreed with the Program Coordinator. |
