V22 Bachelor of Arts (Education)/Bachelor of Social Science (Home Economics)

INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this double degree is to provide a realistic and relevant balance between professional education studies and content studies for prospective secondary school teachers of home economics in secondary schools.  The course includes an emphasis on theoretical and practical dimensions in the areas of children and family studies, textiles, hospitality and food science in addition to relevant studies in Education.

 

COURSE LOCATION AND MODE OF STUDY

The course is available by full-time or part-time study on Mount Lawley campus.  Students may have to travel to the Joondalup campus for some units.

 

The course comprises of thirty six (36) units of study (or 480 credit points) with sixteen units being studied in each degree course.

 

SPECIAL ADMISSION REQUIRMENTS

Standard University Admission requirements apply.

 

SPECIAL EXIT POINTS

Students who complete only three years of study will be able to qualify for a Bachelor of Social Science, subject to meeting the course structure of that award

 

PROFESSIONAL RECOGNITION

Graduates will qualify as four-year trained teachers and be able to meet teacher registration requirements in all Australian states.

 

NOTES

This course is a concurrent form of teacher education where the student is able to combine studies in Education, and Children and Family Studies and Home Economics in each semester.  In the early stages, greater attention is given to content studies while professional studies tend to dominate the latter semesters.

 

A feature of the course is an extensive program of professional practice in secondary schools that commences in year 2 and culminates in the Assistant Teacher Program (10 weeks) in the final year.

 

The course provides a clear balance of content studies, professional studies and professional practice

NOTES:
1. The General Studies B units will be selected from the areas of English or Social Science. In exceptional circumstances, an alternative area may be approved by the Course Co-ordinator.

2. This degree provides a multi-disciplinary course specially designed for the preparation of secondary Home Economics teachers. This course utilises units from at least three Faculties.

3. Catholic Accreditation A can be obtained by substituting one Education unit.

4. Catholic Accreditation B can be obtained by completing a Minor Teaching Field in Catholic Education.
