SAN3121 The Political Sociology of the Environment
SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATIONS AND ARTS
Credit Points: 15

Description:

This unit examines the dilemmas facing environmental policy makers in a global system of economics and politics. States are prepared to voice a commitment to sustainability in environmental, economic, and social systems, but trade-offs are required among the different policy areas. The unit examines these trade-offs and the apparent contradictions between sustainable ecological systems and economic growth. Key topics in the unit include the problems of environmental forecasting, economic instruments for achieving environmental goals, issues in policy formulation, and the rise of the green movement. The unit considers the preconditions for successful policy measures in the pursuit of a democratic, equitable and sustainable society.
