J37 Master of Criminal Justice by Research
In this course, students will conduct independent research and prepare and write a research thesis. The emphasis is on student-centred learning and high quality, confident and competent scholastic achievement in research. This course will facilitate independent thought, and will require the student to conceive, plan and conduct a piece of research, taking into account the logistical and practical aspects of conducting applied research. The work will be judged on its theoretical coherence, appropriate use of a research method, ethical conduct of the study and data collection, correct analysis of data, and appropriate conclusions and their relevance to justice, criminology, compliance or law enforcement.
 
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Stage 1 (Preliminary)

Students require a Bachelor degree for admission to Stage 1.
 
Stage 2 (Thesis stage only)

Students can be admitted directly into Stage 2 with the following qualifications:
• A Bachelor degree with Honours: or
• An approved research-based Graduate Diploma; or
• An approved equivalent qualification; or
• Appropriate research preparation.

COURSE STRUCTURE

This course comprises two years of full-time study or the part-time equivalent.

Students complete a thesis in an area of study which has been identified during thesis preparation in discussion with the course coordinator and their supervisor. The thesis component of this course is entirely research based and is equivalent to one year of full-time study. Each semester students will enrol in the research thesis unit at 50 or 100% of full-time enrolment. Students are required to continue re-enrolling in the thesis unit each semester until the thesis is submitted for examination.
