J33 Master of Accounting by Research

This course is designed to provide advanced, research based studies in accounting. It aims to develop understanding of the state of knowledge in the discipline area alongside knowledge and ability relating to research methods and research activity in accounting. Students will be engaged in a significant research investigation resulting in the production of a thesis with either a theoretical or an applied focus.
 
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Stage 1 (Coursework and thesis)

  • Students require a Bachelor degree for admission to Stage 1.

 

Stage 2 (Thesis stage only)

Students can be admitted directly into Stage 2 with the following qualifications:

  • A Bachelor degree with Honours: or
  • An approved research-based Graduate Diploma; or
  • An approved equivalent qualification; or
  • Appropriate research preparation.

COURSE STRUCTURE

The course comprises two years of full-time study or the equivalent part-time study.  The program includes two stages.  
 
STAGE 1
Stage 1 requires the completion of 120 credit points (6 units) consiting of units in research methodologies as well as the state of knowledge and research activity in Accounting, plus two thesis preparation units.
 
Semester 1

Plus two electives
 
 
ELECTIVE UNITS
Choose 3 electives from the following:
ACC5610 Financial Accounting Theory 15
ACC5630 Management Accounting 15
ACC5660 Financial Accounting Standards 15
ACC5700 Advanced International Accounting 15
 
 
Students planning to conduct survey or qualitative research may wish to take MKT5705 Quantitative Research Methods or MKT5704 Qualitative Research Methods. This should be discussed with the course coordinator and/or supervisor early in your studies.


 
STAGE 2
Students complete a thesis in an area of study which has been identified during thesis preparation in discussion with the course coordinator and their supervisor. The thesis component of this course is entirely research based and is equivalent to one year of full-time study. Each semester students will enrol in the research thesis unit at 50 or 100% of full-time enrolment. Students are required to continue re-enrolling in the thesis unit each semester until the thesis is submitted for examination.
