CENTRE FOR INDIGENOUS AUSTRALIAN EDUCATION AND RESEARCH (KURONGKURL KATITJIN)
Credit Points: 15

Description:

Commencing with an examination of students’ own knowledge and experience of the topics to be covered, this unit explores a range of socio-cultural, economic  and historical issues from the position of Indigenous Australians.  This exploration will be conducted with a particular focus on active citizenship and health and wellness.  Students will have the opportunity to develop knowledge and understandings of, for example, Indigenous health and wellness, citizenship, child development in Indigenous contexts, language, education, justice, land rights struggle, racism, and representations of Indigenous peoples in written, oral and graphic discourses.   Using these understandings, students will explore the dominant values that have shaped Australian society and will analyse their own cultural, social and physical identities.  The influence of active citizenship in promoting change will be explored.
