PHE5102 Research on Teaching Physical and Health Education
SCHOOL OF EDUCATION
Credit Points: 15

Description:
This unit initially investigates the contemporary context that has given rise to the Health and Physical Education Learning Area (HPELA) for Australian Schools. The notion of an integrated learning area is considered from the position of current thinking in the field and the recently released WA Curriculum Framework document. Recent developments in HPELA are considered within an historical perspective of research on teaching in the HPELA. The unit then explores how research on teaching in the Learning Area is rooted in the broader educational research framework. Students will examine the contemporary research literature specific to the teaching of physical education, health education, outdoor education and dance education and gain an understanding of research methods and findings that have impacted on, or have the potential to impact on, the work of teachers in schools. The final part of the unit engages students in the application of research findings to an area of significance determined by each student. Students can pursue a particular area of interest and conduct an small scale independent inquiry into an aspect of physical education (including sport education), health education, outdoor education or dance education during the latter part of the semester.
