MWB1102 Media and Society - Norway

Description:
The unit introduces students to the main divelopements in the rise of modern mass media. The course will give an overview of the historical development of newspaper, TV and radio, with an emphasis on newspaper. These developments are situated within the cultural context of modernity and its forces of industrialization, urbanization and globalization. They are also related historically and thematically to their impact on human interaction, perceptions of space and time, the formation of individual and national cultural identities and the relationship between the public and private spheres. The course will primarily have a Norwegian focus, although much will have an international relevance. Norwegian media law and media seen in relation to the three “powers of the State” (the trial system, the political system and organizations) and as the forth one, will be taught. There will also be a focus on the development of journalism as a profession and on sociological aspects of the journalist role itself. Ethical issues in the journalistic production process will also be emphasized.
