MSE6603 Diverse Contexts for Learning Mathematics
SCHOOL OF EDUCATION
Credit Points: 15

Description:

In this unit, effective teaching practice in mathematics classrooms will again be addressed. This will be done from two quite different perspectives and in two contrasting contexts. Students will work across School of Education programs in some one-on-one peer mentoring work with simple Number concepts; and the unit will also give students the opportunity to observe and to work with academically gifted Year 8, 9 or 10 students in a University-sponsored mathematics enrichment program.  Students will thus further develop their understanding of teaching and learning through the planning and assessment of secondary mathematics curricula, but in two different scenarios to that of a secondary school. They will again employ their understanding of the organisational principles of the WA Curriculum Framework, using a mathematical inquiry approach to the teaching and learning of skills in order to assist student peers who are experiencing mathematics difficulties; and in the enrichment program they will also have the opportunity to observe some excellent teaching practice, and to learn some strategies for sharing some “big picture” mathematics with more able mathematics students in mainstream mathematics classrooms. Mathematics majors will also look closely again at mathematics teaching in the senior secondary years, in relation both to the WA Courses of Study for Mathematics and the Australian Curriculum.
