IAS6601 Indigenous Education
SCHOOL OF EDUCATION
Credit Points: 15

Description:

This unit provides education students with the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and capacity required to engage professionally with Indigenous Australian students, their families and communities. Students examine aspects of colonial history, cultural and linguistic norms, racism and representation, and contemporary socio-economic determinants to account for the current status of Indigenous Australian education. Based on their emerging knowledge of Indigenous Australia, students develop skills and strategies to improve educational outcomes for Indigenous and non-Indigenous students. A key outcome of the unit is an enhanced level of cultural competency – confident and effective interaction with Indigenous Australians in an education context.
