NUM6601 Numeracy Across the Curriculum: Diagnosis and Support
SCHOOL OF EDUCATION
Credit Points: 15

Description:

This unit is comprised of two modules. The first module examines the important numeracy skills and concepts of which teachers in all learning areas particularly need to be aware in the transition period of Years 7 and 8. Pre-service teachers of learning areas other than mathematics will be introduced to some specific and fundamental understandings that support their disciplines. Conversely, pre-service teachers of mathematics will be given an opportunity to reflect upon how their discipline content is needed and used in other learning areas. Participants will work in collaborative groups, with learning area specialisations acting as organisers. Students will be asked to share their understandings of the importance of numeracy, and to appreciate how and why their discipline areas connect across the curriculum.

The second module uses recent NAPLAN (National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy) test documents at Years 7 and 9 as tools for the diagnosis of some common and basic student misconceptions in Number, Measurement, and Space. The module is based on the belief that teachers may use national testing in a positive way in their classrooms, and as a vehicle for better teaching and understanding of their students’ needs. Once again, the emphasis will be upon the value of developing a cross-disciplinary approach to numeracy problems, and upon the importance of teachers’ awareness of the numeracy skills needed by this age group of students.
