PLS6601 An Introduction to Professional Learning in Secondary Schools
SCHOOL OF EDUCATION
Credit Points: 15

Description:
This unit explores the principles of productive pedagogy, which incorporates the theory and practice of teaching and learning and how learning is assessed. The unit aims to deepen the prospective teacher’s knowledge and understanding about key theories of teaching and learning and how these understandings contribute to effective classroom teaching and learning. It assumes a model of the classroom teacher as a rational autonomous educator able to make justifiable professional decisions about their work and to develop appropriate strategies to enhance effective teaching and learning. The unit also focuses clearly on the development of skills and strategies teachers need to be effective in their work. These skills and strategies include research-supported models of effective teaching, a range of effective teaching skills and strategies, instructional media, assessment strategies, understanding curriculum, planning for effective teaching, and assessment of outcomes. Strong emphasis is placed on relating these theoretical understandings as an initial professional learning experience in a secondary school context.
