This unit will focus on the connections between human society and the environment to enable pre-service teachers to acquire and utilise concepts and skills from the Social Sciences’ learning areas. The unit will refer to contemporary curriculum documents with reference to History, Geography, Economics and Politics, together with Aboriginal knowledge and perspectives, Asian studies and living sustainably. Opportunities will also be provided to design and implement learning experiences relating to the overarching goal of schools, Active and Informed Citizenship, and to apply important concepts, skills and values from contemporary Social Science curricula in their own lives and to classroom contexts.
 
The unit will provide opportunities for the development of a range of socially just and culturally responsive pedagogical and assessment strategies for active engagement in the Social Science learning areas. Pre-service teachers will develop critical awareness of values that underpin reorientation towards a sustainable future including social justice, democracy and ecological praxis.
