SCHOOL OF EDUCATION
Credit Points: 15

Description:

This unit comprises an on-campus component and 3 weeks of professional learning in a Kindergarten or Pre-primary setting. In participating in professional learning students will use curriculum documents to plan, implement and assess teaching and learning. Students will review contemporary learning theories and knowledge of child development for children aged 3-5 years through a socio-cultural lens. Students will investigate pedagogical principles and practices that underpin effective early childhood education. A range of methods for motivating, engaging and assessing young children’s learning will be explored. This unit is built on the premise that effective teachers are active participants in learning communities and will implement inquiry skills for reflection and set goals for future professional learning.

This is a Designated Unit involving a Professional learning placement in a school/centre where students gain essential practical experience of school life. The placement provides a critical opportunity to connect theory with practice and develop the fundamental knowledge, dispositions, understandings and competencies of a beginning teacher under the guidance of experienced professionals.
