MSE5111 Teaching Lower Secondary Mathematics
SCHOOL OF EDUCATION
Credit Points: 10

Description:
This unit provides an introduction to the teaching and learning of lower secondary school mathematics, with a particular emphasis on the Australian Curriculum cluster Number and Algebra. The fundamentals of learning theory will be practically applied to the specific teaching of mathematics. Activities for promoting classroom participation will be introduced, and students will have opportunity to engage in and plan a variety of activities consistent both with the scope and sequence of the Australian Curriculum and the Western Australian Curriculum Framework (WACF) outcome statements. Pedagogy will encourage the development of an appreciation of mathematics as a useful and creatively interesting area of study by regularly incorporating mathematical investigation into classroom learning, and by focusing on developing mathematical literacy. Years 7 to 10 will be the focus, but this will be supported by strong reference to many important mathematical concepts established in the preceding primary years, especially in the areas of number and pre-algebra.
