This unit requires a critical review of a number of theories and research methodologies which may, or do influence planning practice, policy and research. This research unit comprises a study program of one year full time study or part time equivalent. A reflective analysis of these theories and the values which may influence the student’s own practice and the professional settings within which they work, is to be presented.  The master’s thesis by research will present the findings of planning or urban design research based on various research purposes, founded on either a qualitative or quantitative approach. By the end of their candidature the student should be capable of conceiving, designing, implementing and evaluating a research based study that is equivalent to a standard that is internationally recognised in the relevant discipline or disciplines. The thesis should also be consistent with the requirements outlined in Edith Cowan University's Doctoral and Masters by Research Handbook.  The areas of research specialisation may include urban and regional planning, statutory planning, strategic planning, environmental planning, community planning, transport planning, urban design planning law and governance or project development.
