SEA0203 Classroom Support Skills for Special Needs Education

Description:

The aim of this unit is to provide an overview of a range of disabilities Education Assistants (Special Needs) may be employed to support. The impact of each disability on a child’s overall learning and their successful inclusion into school settings will be examined. An explanation of the key diagnostic criteria and behaviours of specific disabilities will be given to increase the Education Assistant's (Special Needs) understanding of the specific needs of learners. The areas of verbal and non-verbal communication, comprehension, augmentative communication, behaviour management techniques, supporting social skills and promoting self help and independent living skills will be studied. Information on support services and external agencies available in the community for students with special needs, their families and schools will be investigated.
