CRI5202 Child Sexual Abuse - Investigations and Interviewing
SCHOOL OF LAW AND JUSTICE
Credit Points: 15
Prerequisites:
CRI5201 Child Sexual Abuse - Victims and Offenders

Description:

Students will learn the principles of investigations and interviewing related to children and offenders.  The unit looks at child abuse from the perspective of investigating crimes, and interviewing children, witnesses and suspects following a sexual abuse incident.  Students will examine how child pornography and supportive evidence are evaluated. They will develop an understanding of the defences used by perpetrators.  The value of a multi-disciplinary team approach to investigations involving police, child protection workers and other professional disciplines will be explored.  Interview structure, case management and the importance of a well-structured investigation to successful prosecution will be covered.  As interviews play a key role in child abuse investigations, students will study interview protocols in respect to suspects, offending and non-offending care givers, children as victims and witnesses, and relatives and friends.
