Description:
The general aim of the unit is to expose the student of non-English speaking background to the various types and varieties of spoken and written discourse and communicative functions relevant to their academic study. Depending on the group of students to whom the unit is offered, the unit could focus on a specific field of study (eg Business Studies). The unit aims to assist the student to develop greater facility in the four macro skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) as well as in such study skills as note-taking, library research, essay writing and reading for inferencing as these relate to Academic English. The unit aims to do this within an Australian context and against the background of Australian culture.
