V75 Bachelor of Arts Honours

The Bachelor of Arts Honours is a one year course for students who have demonstrated strong academic ability in their Bachelor degrees. It consists of coursework and the preparation of a thesis.

 

Honours candidates are accepted in the fields of:  English, Geography, History, Language Studies (French and Japanese),  Politics and Government and Writing.

 

All theses, except in French and Japanese, follow the ECU Guidelines, that is 15,000 words are required (with a maximum of 17,000 words).

Writing thesis.  The thesis for a Writing student comprises a creative project and a related theoretical/critical essay. The creative work (approximately 60% of marks) will take the form of either a collection of poems, a one-act play script, a novella, or a collection of short fiction or non-fiction. In special circumstances, and with the approval of the Honours coordinator, students may be permitted to submit part of a longer work in any of the above genres, or part of a novel, biographical/historical work or other work of non-fiction.

Writing essay (5,000 words maximum). The Writing essay (approximately 40% of marks) takes the form of an essay which may involve one or more of the following in relation to the writing project: relevant theoretical issues; conceptual and/or cultural contexts; aims and methods; relation to other writers or writing within the genre; any other matter agreed upon with the Candidate's Supervisor and appropriately approved.

 

French or Japanese (10,000-15,000 words).  The thesis should be written in the appropriate language.

 
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

In order to be eligible for consideration for provisional admission to Honours, students should normally have a minimum course average of 70 per cent at the end of semester 1, year three, of their study program. In special circumstances, it may be possible for students with lower averages to enter the Honours program. In these cases students should contact the Honours coordinator directly to discuss possible admission.
