| The general aim of the unit is to expose the student to the types and varieties of spoken and written discourse, communicative functions, and conceptual activities related to the theme, 'Science and Technology', and its sub-themes, for example 'computer studies', 'geology of the gold fields' and 'comet watching'. More specifically, the aim of ESL1009 is to assist the student in developing greater facility in the four macroskills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) as well as in such study skills as note-taking, library research and reading for inferencing as these relate to 'academic English'.
