Description:

This unit examines the historical and international context of Indigenous peoples in the world today. It focuses mainly on Pacific Rim countries, including First Nations' people in Canada, Native Americans in the United States, and Maori in New Zealand. The unit considers the history of colonialism in the region and the creation of contemporary identities of Indigenous Peoples. The international context of Indigenous peoples is analysed, including the role of the United Nations, the Draft Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and Indigenous political organisations.
