SAN3123 Travel, Trade and Tourism: Anthropological Perspectives
SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATIONS AND ARTS
Credit Points: 15

Description:

International travel is a major phenomenon. Its scale and pace of increase has been especially evident in the second half of the twentieth century. Much of this travel is linked to tourism. Another dimension is linked to regional and international trade – two aspects of globalisation. Two other dimensions relate to international student travel and to pilgrimage. In each of these travel situations people of widely different backgrounds encounter each other as cultural strangers. The unit examines how tourists and other people engaged in trade, labour, and education make those cultural encounters and with what effectiveness. Drawing mainly on case studies by anthropologists, the unit lays special emphasis on Australia’s Asia Pacific relations in order to prepare students for, and to enrich them about, such encounters. The unit closely examines Bali and may include an optional field trip to Bali.
