The unit focuses on the practical and applied aspects of labour economics. Microeconomic theory is used to explain the functioning of labour markets including the impact of institutional forces (government, employers and unions) on market outcomes. Theory is applied to the study of a number of current workplace issues including work choice, the screening and hiring of workers, incentives, bargaining and outsourcing. Other issues covered include globalisation, casualisation and the future of work, pay inequality, minimum wages, unemployment, taxation and welfare. Full Unit Outline | |||
