SCHOOL OF EDUCATION
Credit Points: 15

Description:

This unit introduces students to concepts of active citizenship particularly across the diverse contexts of Australian society.  The unit will provide opportunities for pre-service teachers to make links across active citizenship, notions of individual and community health and wellness and particular social, cultural, civic and environmental contexts.  Students will also investigate the rights and responsibilities of Australians as active citizens in a global community. Student will also analyse their own cultural positioning within Australian society and critique how it has impacted on personal and professional thinking about past, current and future educational contexts.  Further pre-service teachers will consider the positioning of Indigenous Australians within this country from a range of perspectives with a view to understanding Aboriginal perspectives on history and contemporary issues, specifically related to education, alienation and disadvantage.
