ERM2203 Mathematics Education: Space and Geometry (from Pythagorus to NASA)
SCHOOL OF REGIONAL PROFESSIONAL STUDIES
Credit Points: 12
Prerequisites:
ERM1101 Mathematics Education: Thinking and Learning

Description:

The mathematics of 2D and 3D space will be investigated through a combination of concrete manipulatives, biographical, historical and problem based approaches. Students will apply an inquiry approach to a variety of key people in mathematics in order to contextualise developments that underpinned human exploration on land, sea, air and space as well as architecture, engineering, art and design.  A major focus of this unit will be the development of effective teaching and learning strategies and the use of open-ended tasks to promote higher order thinking skills. Students will examine theoretical views on learning geometry and current curriculum documents and requirements, underpinned by an understanding of Working Mathematically and Number. This unit is linked to work place practice and students will be required to connect the theory from the unit to their observations and experiences in school settings.
