SAN1103 Social Influences on Learning

Description:
This unit focuses on the social context of education, beginning with the different family forms in which children learn about the society in which they live. The unit addresses the influences of socioeconomic status, gender, ethnicity and Aboriginality on opportunities to take part in education. Key issues include the distribution of educational disadvantage and disadvantage across generations and social groups; gender equality; ethnic diversity; the consequences of Aboriginal policies on Indigenous Australians; and the growing presence of non-government schooling in Australia. The unit introduces students to the fundamental elements of social research and the sociological analysis of contemporary societies.
