PPA4664 Assistant Teacher Experience 2
SCHOOL OF EDUCATION
Credit Points: 30

Description:
The Assistant Teacher Experience (ATE) in the BEd (Kindergarten through Primary) is an extended practice designed to provide the opportunity to experience eight weeks in a primary setting. Assistant teachers will spend four days per week in the setting and a further one day per week on the university campus. This pattern of experience is designed to enhance the assistant teachers’ capacity to reflect on their work as a member of a learning community, and take increasing responsibility for their own professional development. During the ATE, assistant teachers are expected to further acquire and refine skills in using an integrated approach to teaching, one which is focussed on learning outcomes for children. They will be expected to adopt a cyclic approach to planning, teaching and evaluating and to use information from their evaluations to inform future planning and teaching. They will also be expected to build appropriate relationships and communicate effectively with parents. By the end of the ATE the assistant teacher is expected to be competent to teach a primary class and undertake the range of duties expected of a newly qualified teacher.
