MYS4004 Middle Schooling Curriculum and Pedagogy
SCHOOL OF EDUCATION
Credit Points: 12

Description:
The essence of middle schooling lies not in organisational structures. Rather, it lies in a curriculum, pedagogy and classroom culture based on the principles of constructivism, cooperative learning and open, inclusive communities. These principles are critical for ensuring that schooling meets the young adolescents' needs for engagement, independence, identity, and belonging. Through this unit students will become familiar with state-defined student outcomes, able to adapt them to local contexts, and able to develop curriculum around these outcomes. The unit will also focus on the psychology and sociology of middle years' pedagogy and classroom learning communities. Consideration will be given to the relevance of multiple intelligences, professional teaching standards, authentic learning and productive pedagogies for the middle years' teacher.
