MUS3502 Advanced Studies in Music 5

Description:
The unit will examine the development of selected composers of Western music in the twentieth century, with specific reference to Impressionism, the influence of Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes on ballet music, some earlier works of Stravinsky, Prokofiev, and will trace folk influences and Neo-classical tendencies in selected English, Spanish and other European compositions. Whole-tone, pentatonic and related techniques will be analysed, as will arranging for ensembles. Composition and keyboard exercises will involve selected early twentieth-century approaches. Instrumental/vocal practicum will build on previous performance studies.
