MAE4105 Studies in K-3 Mathematics Education

Description:
The current theory and practice of teaching and learning mathematics in Years K - 3 will be examined through a study of the research findings of acknowledged leaders in the field - Cobb, Dienes, Steffe, von Glasserfeld, Pengelly, Skemp and Shuard, as well as through a range of recently produced curriculum material. The role of language in the teaching and learning of mathematics by young children will be discussed. Issues such as assessment, problem solving, mathematics in a multi-age classroom, the use of calculators and computers and the integration of mathematics across the curriculum will be explored.
