C17 Diploma in Science

The Diploma in Science is a one-year course of eight units (120 credit points) that provides a range of learning opportunities for the study of one of the following science groups: Technology science; Information science; Health science; Sport science; and Natural/Environmental science.

Students select six or seven science units from the respective groups, according to their needs in this course and/or as entry with advanced standing into other courses.

The aim of the course is to offer a range of areas of scientific study so that students can complete first year at ECU South West and then progress:

  • to courses at ECU South West such as the Bachelor of Science (Nursing) or Bachelor of Science (Surf Science & Technology);
  • to course in the Faculty of Computing, Health and Science at ECU in Perth; or
  • to other courses at other universities.

The Faculty of Computing Health and Science has indicated that students completing a Diploma in Science will receive one year's advanced standing into the Bachelor of Science.

Some groups who may benefit from this course include:

  • students who do not have science prerequisites for courses which require science;
  • students who wish to progress to a science degree in Perth but want to complete their first year on campus in the South West region;
  • tradespeople, operators and semi-professionals in mining and other industries where knowledge of science is an advantage;
  • students seeking a gap year experience that also gives them a qualification that can be used to gain entrance or receive advanced standing for other programs; and
  • students seeking an experience to help them decide which area of science they wish to focus on.

Some additional units, currently only available on metropolitan campuses, may be made available in intensive mode subject to demand and need.
