POL3122 Contemporary America: Government, Economy and Society
SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATIONS AND ARTS
Credit Points: 15

Description:

In the developing global era, the representation of American government and society are at unprecedented levels in both popular culture and the mainstream media. The national ethos of individual freedom, limited government and the pursuit of material abundance is increasingly becoming the standard-bearer for all nations actively seeking to compete in the global economy. This unit critically examines ‘the American model’. It examines the cultural ideas held about government and the operation of the major institutions: Congress, the presidency and the Supreme Court. The enduring strengths of American democracy, and especially the emphasis on individual rights, are set against debates over the erosion of democratic ideals through the impact of the media and vested interests. The unit examines the basis of America’s dominance in the world and examines some of its major issues: crime and punishment, welfare, and race and politics.
