WMS1101 A Woman's Place in Society

Description:
This unit introduces students to the theories and concepts of Women's Studies. Historical, anthropological and sociological perspectives are used to explore the lives of women in different times and places. Particular attention is given to the history of women's activism in Australia and to the contemporary provision of services to women.  An exploration of feminist understandings of the cultural construction of femininity is followed by a detailed investigation of feminist responses to work, women's health issues and violence against women.  The unit concludes with reflections on the search for meaning in women's lives.
