MUS3112 Advanced Studies in Music 5

Description:

This unit is designed for students wanting to become music teachers in a secondary school environment. The unit will provide skills for education students to examine the development of selected composers of Western music in the twentieth century, with specific reference to the works of the late Romantic period, Impressionism, the influence of Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes on ballet music, works of Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Shostakovitch and De Falla, and will trace folk influences and Neo-classical tendencies in selected English, French, Spanish and other European compositions.  Whole-tone, pentatonic and related techniques will be analysed, as will arranging for ensembles.  Composition and keyboard exercises will involve selected early twentieth-century approaches. Instrumental/vocal practicum will build on previous performance studies.
