GEO3121 The Art and Practice of Dwelling
SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATIONS AND ARTS
Credit Points: 15

Description:

This unit is a geographical study of population and dwelling which addresses the following three main dimensions: the distribution of people over the earth; the evolution of human societies; and the degree of success which they have achieved. Humans who are relative newcomers to the planet have brought dramatic changes to their environments so that for the first time in human history the cumulative effects of rapid increases in population, rapid industrial growth and development are causing changes on a global scale. A central focus of this unit will be upon the development of the earth as human habitat. The word ‘humanus’ literally means ‘earth dweller’. This unit will focus on the distribution and pattern of human populations globally as well as within Australia. It will emphasise the importance of population data in planning for Australia’s future and the provision of valuable insights into nations with whom we have significant economic and social links. It will also provide conceptual tools for analysing the success of human dwelling in terms of social, economic and ecological sustainability.
