INTRODUCTION The Bachelor of Laws degree is an academic qualification which (subject to recognition by the Legal Practice Board) qualifies a graduate to undertake further training (articled training program) governed by the Legal Practice Act 2003 (WA) which then qualifies the graduate to practice as a restricted and/or fully qualified legal practitioner in WA.
The Bachelor Award is granted after the successful completion of four years of full time study.
In order to complete the degree students are required to complete thirty two units comprising 21 compulsory units and 11 elective units.
LOCATION AND MODE OF STUDY The Bachelor of Laws is available by full time and part time study at the Joondalup campus in the internal mode. Future consideration will be given to delivery of the degree program in external mode subject to resources.
SPECIAL ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS There are a number of possible entry options. Reference should be made to the ECU (Academic, Enrolment and Academic Progress Rules) and to the Tertiary Institutions Service Centre (TISC) Guide. The university may control and limit the admission and enrolment of students.
COURSE STRUCTURE The course is designed to develop coherence through thematic doctrinal coverage in a structured program.
The units to be undertaken to complete the course are indicated in the following table. Each of the units will address relevant issues relating to ethics, alternative dispute resolution, social justice and law reform as part of the coverage in units and through clinical exposure in the Community Legal Centre and the Francis Burt Legal Education Centre.
To complete the degree a student must achieve a total 480 points.
Please note that it is the intention of the School of Justice and Business Law to introduce further elective units allowing students some degree of choice in the units undertaken to complete the degree. At this time the following units remain compulsory units:
