The Master of Midwifery course is designed for registered midwives who wish to continue their professional and academic development by furthering their clinical, research, teaching or administrative roles. Its purpose is to extend and enhance the competencies of midwifery graduates, preparing them for advanced practice and leadership positions.

COURSE LOCATION AND MODE OF STUDY

Churchlands campus by full or part-time study. Only NUR5113 is currently available via external study.

Students require access to a computer with software for word processing and a modem capable of accessing on-line resources. Shared facilities are available on campus in student computer laboratories.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must be eligible for registration as a midwife in Division One of the register of the Nurses Board of Western Australia and have twelve months post-registration midwifery clinical experience. Applicants who do not have a Bachelor of Nursing or its equivalent may be eligible for admission on the basis of recognised prior learning.

COURSE STRUCTURE

The Post Graduate Diploma of Midwifery comprises Year One of the course and consists of six units of study. Registered midwives are eligible to enter Year 2 of the Master of Midwifery by coursework program following a minimum of 12 months full time post registration clinical experience. In Year 2, ECU midwifery graduates undertake three units of study. Applicants without an ECU midwifery qualification must complete additional units prior to commencing Year 2. All students in Year 2 must have concurrent employment as a midwife for 16 hours per week. Due to clinical practice requirements, Year 1 is conducted over 42 weeks and commences outside the normal University semester times. Year 2 follows the standard academic timetable.
