390 Bachelor of Education (Secondary)

The Bachelor of Education (Secondary) is designed to prepare students to teach a major subject at all year levels in the secondary school. The only majors available for study are Design and Technology Education and Music Education - Classical Major. Other subject areas are available as Double Degrees. The award is granted after the successful completion of four years of full-time study.

 

COURSE LOCATION AND MODE OF STUDY

The Bachelor of Education (Secondary) - Design and Technology Major  and Music Education - Classical Major are available by full-time or part-time study on Mount Lawley campus.

Internship semester

Depending on availability of placements in schools, high achieving students who have a maximum of four units left to complete their degrees may be offered the opportunity to undertake their final semester of study via an internship position teaching in a school. Interested students will be expected to complete an expression of interest prior to commencing their ATP and to liaise with the secondary internship coordinator.

Once the internship is confirmed, students should enrol in:

and three other units appropriate to the course structure.
 
Catholic Accreditation B
Students who wish to teach Religious Education in the Catholic School system should choose 3 relevant units. Completion of these three units will meet the study requirements for Accreditation B. Unit selections must be confirmed with the Course Coordinator.
 
NOTES

1. In each of years, 2, 3 and 4 of the program students undertake professional (teaching) practice, (PPA units).

2. In the fourth year, students undertake an Assistant Teacher Program comprising one term of approximately ten weeks of continuous teaching practice in a secondary school.

3. For additional information on Teaching Practice refer to the Professional Practice Information, Procedures and Rules at the end of the section for the School of Education.

4. All students enrolled in the Bachelor of Education (Secondary) are required to demonstrate competency in literacy and numeracy. Student assignments and examinations must be of an appropriate academic standard.

5. Electives: Students choose units offered within the School of Education or from units offered in other schools to best support their career options. Three units must be at Level 4 (unless the electives are made up of units from another School or Faculty as part of a three-year program). Only a limited number of nominated electives may be available.
