J02 Master of Social Science

The Master of Social Science program is designed for professionals involved in the delivery of services to the community.  The focus of the program is to critically examine and explore research paradigms that will provide professionals with a sound background upon which to develop their research in the diverse range of social sciences contexts.  Within this broad focus there is an opportunity to specialise in the participatory action research paradigm.

 

COURSE LOCATION AND MODE OF STUDY

The course is available by full-time or part-time study on Joondalup campus.  It is also available in the external mode.

 

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Students who have completed a relevant bachelor degree and have demonstrated sound academic performance may apply for admission.

Students who have completed an honours degree in a relevant field of study may apply for exemptions.  Students will be expected to have had substantial experience in the field of human services.

 

COURSE STRUCTURE

Students are required to complete the equivalent of twelve units.

 
Stage 1

Plus two units selected from:
RES5101 Research Preparation: Methods of Research 20 
RES5102 Research Preparation: Qualitative Approaches 20 
RES5103 Research Preparation: Quantitative Research Methods 20 
RES5104 Research Preparation: Textual Research 20 
RES5105 Research Preparation:The Context of Research 20 
RES5111 Research Preparation: Strategies of Evaluation 20 
 
Stage 2
The thesis component of this course is entirely research based and equivalent to 1 year of full-time study. Each semester students nominate if they wish to enrol into research thesis unit: HUM6200 at 25, 50, 75 or 100% of full-time enrolment.
 
Students are required to continue re-enrolling in the thesis component of their study until the thesis is submitted for examination.

Students who are unable to proceed to Stage 2 may be eligible to graduate with a Post Graduate Diploma of Social Science (Human Services).
